5 New Year’s Resolutions for Vehicle Owners

It’s almost 2022 and a great time to set some New Year’s resolutions for yourself – and your car. You can set some goals that are focused on improving your car’s performance and longevity. Here are some New Year’s Resolutions every car owner should make.

1.  Keep Up With Car Maintenance

If you neglected your car maintenance in 2021, make a promise to be better about it in 2022. In fact, now’s a good time to call your local mechanic and make an appointment for a checkup. They can take a look at your overall vehicle as well as check key components such as the tires to make sure the tread is on point.

Yes, it can be time consuming to stay on top of maintenance, but it will ensure you don’t get hit with bigger problems down the line that can cost you a pretty penny. Be sure to get regular oil changes and tire care, as well as inspections of your brake pads and engine.

2.  Check Your Tires

A lot is riding on the quality of your car’s tires – literally.Don’t neglect regular tire rotations and alignments, and always check the tire pressure. These practices will ensure your tires have the longest life span possible and will keep you safe on the road. If you drive on low tire pressure, you could be at risk for a blowout – a very dangerous proposition indeed.

3.     Learn Some Maintenance

Sure, your car needs to be seen by a mechanic on a regular basis, but there are some smaller maintenance tasks that you can do yourself. You can replace your windshield wipers (twice a year), check or change the oil, check the tire pressure, change your air filter, change the coolant, and check the battery. You can save some money and learn something new at the same time.

4.     Vow Not to Drive Distracted

In 2019 alone, distracted driving claimed 3,142 lives, according to the NHTSA. You may know by now that texting is dangerous, but not all distracted driving involves texting. In fact, anything that takes your attention off the road is distracted driving, such as adjusting the radio, reaching for something, using an app, checking your GPS, taking a photo, checking email, posting to social media, drinking and eating, and grooming.

Truth is, distracted driving is preventable. Vow to pay more attention this year!

5.  Keep Your Car Clean

For some of you, it’s a daily challenge to keep your car clean and tidy. But in the interest of safety – and your sanity – it’s important to de-clutter your car. Do this at least once a week. Throw junk in the trash, organize important papers, vacuum the seats and floor, wipe down your windows, and give your car a good wash.
